"Tasting vom 01.01.2022: Peter Moser
Dunkles Rubingranat, violette Reflexe, zarter Wasserrand.

"2019 Vintage Tasted: Oct 2022
The wine is seriously rich with solid tannins. The tannins are softening into a more velvet texture that suits this style of wine well. It is giving a smoky character to the wine as well as richness. This is a great wine, very aromatic and concentrated. Drink from 2027. Roger Voss"

"2019 Vintage Tasted: Mar 2022
Not quite at the level of the over the moon 2016, but not too far either, this sublime gem is almost opaque in color. This is so concentrated, silky, rich and decadent, it's almost off the charts. Blackberry, espresso, black currants, licorice, flowers and wet earth with cherry blossoms crowd into the perfume. Fresh, vibrant, lively and structured to age and evolve for decades, the wine ends with waves of perfectly ripe, vibrant, red and black fruits that simply do not want to quit! Drink from 2035-2060. 99 Points"

30% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Cabernet Franc, 14% Alkohol. Was für ein Duft, ungemein viel Würze, der Cabernet Franc spricht, dunkle Beeren, Cassis, Süssholz, Tabak, sogar zitrische Aromen; dichter Gaumen, süsse Frücht, feinste Tannine, mineralisches, rotfruchtig geprägtes Finale, viel Salzigkeit, grandiose Länge. Ein eleganter, femininer Figeac. 2028-2060"

The 2019 Figeac has turned out brilliantly. Wafting from the glass with aromas of blackberries, cassis, warm spices, violets and pencil shavings, framed by a deft touch of nicely integrated new oak, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with terrific depth at the core, powdery structuring tannins and lively acids, concluding with a long, precise finish. Rich but vibrant, this 2019 reflects the new precision that Frédéric Faye has brought to Figeac; but while it's richer and more polished than the wines of yesteryear, the estate's identity hasn't been lost.
Director of Château Figeac since 2013, Frédéric Faye emphasizes precision and timing when he characterizes the estate's evolution over the last decade. Harvest now lasts three or four weeks, stopping and starting, so each parcel of this 41-hectare vineyard can be picked at optimal maturity. Farming is similarly adapted parcel by parcel, emphasizing sustainability. And a brand-new winery triples the team's working space, with small tanks so each parcel can be vinified separately. Yet the objective is to polish Figeac, not to change it. If the estate's wines are now suppler and fuller, their classically Cabernet-rich assemblage hasn't altered. Old-fashioned approaches such as submerged-cap fermentation for fruit growing on gravel soils have been retained. And of course, the estate's distinctive soils haven't changed. Faye and his team have turned in a brilliant performance in 2019, and the Manoncourt family have every reason to be delighted with the new lustre that he has brought to this reference-point châteauPublished: Apr 07, 2022

"Tasting vom 01.01.2022: Peter Moser
Dunkles Rubingranat, violette Reflexe, dezente Randaufhellung. "2016 Vintage Tasted: Jul 2022
Heart-stopping from start to finish, here you have a wealth of perfectly ripe, silky fruits that come in non-stop waves and layers. Purity, silkiness, energy, and cashmere tannins with a seamless finish that easily breaks the 60-second mark and keeps on going. This is one of those special wines that is destined to become a legend in a decade or two. If you have some in your cellar, you are sitting on liquid gold. If you do not have any, and if you have disposable income, grab a few bottles or a case. Drink from 2026-2060. The wine was made by blending 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, and 26% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2026-2060."

97–99. Barrel Sample. This aromatic wine is magnificent in its balance and richness. With its high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon (38%), it is so typical of this estate. The tannins are velvety while packing a firm punch. Dark and concentrated, it is a great wine for long-term aging."

The 2016 Figeac is comprised of 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored, the nose is a little broody and reticent at this very youthful stage, slowly unfolding to reveal profound plum preserves, crème de cassis, black raspberries and star anise with hints of moss-covered bark, truffles and tilled loam plus a waft of red currants and raspberry leaves sparks. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is practically quivering with energy, offering glimpses at tightly wound black fruit and mineral/ferrous layers, framed by very firm, ripe tannins and wonderful tension, finishing long with the spices coming through. This will need a good 7-8 years to come round and then should cellar for 40+ years. Very serious, beautifully poised and sophisticated personality this vintage.
“There was a little more water stress in 2016 than in 2018,” Frédéric Faye mentioned. “The cooler nights here helped us to avoid too much water stress this year. We are not de-leafing a lot now—just on one side to expose the grapes to the morning sun, but we do not de-leaf on the afternoon sun side, where it can get very hot.” Figeac continues along its upward trajectory in terms of heights of greatness and consistency. Faye has adeptly managed to maintain the energy in the wines that is a signature of Figeac while revealing more layers, polishing the tannins and, ultimately, offering slightly more muscle to the fruit core. Once his considerable efforts in the vineyards really kick in and the new winery is completed, I am incredibly excited to see what the future holds for this historic, truly special place.
