2020 Alter Ego du Château Palmer zeigt tiefgründig dunkle, purpurrote Farbe. In der Nase dominieren frische Brombeeren, Sauerkirschen sowie etwas Kirschlikör. Frische Frucht präsentiert sich im Mund mit saftig kräftiger Struktur. Dicht haftet der Wein am Gaumen, begleitet von feinem Tannin. Der Abgang lässt die Frucht weich und fein mit purer Eleganz ausklingen. Mit seinem Alter Ego gelang Château Palmer in 2020 ein klar strukturierter Margaux. Sonnenverwöhnte Merlottrauben und kräftige Cabernets profitierten von ihrem Terroir von außergewöhnlicher Klarheit.

"Dunkles, leuchtendes Rubingranat, violette Reflexe, dezente Randaufhellung. Reife rote Herzkirschen, Waldbeeren, frische Orangenzesten, zarte florale Nuancen. Saftig, frisch, elegant und trinkanimierend, rotbeerige Textur, feine Tannine, mineralisch-salzig im Abgang, angenehme Kirschfrucht im Abgang, ein lebendiger Speisenbegleiter."

The 2020 Alter Ego de Palmer has turned out beautifully, bursting with aromas of violets and rose petals mingled with notions of sweet dark berries and baking chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and seamless, it's vibrant and perfumed, with a bright core of fruit, powdery tannins and a long, expansive finish. It's a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot.

Thomas Duroux continues to produce singularly textural, powerful wines at this historic Margaux property, where he has introduced a new focus on parcel-by-parcel viticulture and vinification, as well as pioneering biodynamic methods, over the better part of the last two decades. Today, cover crops are the order of the day, much of the vineyard isn't hedged, and fruit trees are being planted in the rows as part of an agroforestry initiative. The core of Palmer derives from the plateau around the château, where soils consist of a millefeuille of sandy gravel, clay-rich gravel, sandy gravel again and then a meter of pure clay. It's old-vine Merlot, planted on these soils, that lends Palmer its richness and flesh. There are other parcels dotted around the appellation, of course, including a large block of coarser gravel surrounded by trees, not far from Bel Air Marquis d'Aligre.  Published: Apr 06, 2023

2012 Château Palmer zeigt mittleres, dichtes Granatrot, grandios schon die Nase von Mokkabohnen, Zigarrenkiste, Süßholz, etwas tiefer im Glas dann Waldbeeren, Leder und Trüffel. Den Geschmack bestimmt samtige Textur im Ansatz, ihre Eleganz füllt den Gaumen. Dort wirkt die reife Cassisfrucht konzentriert mit guter Struktur. Ihr feinkörniges, süßes Tannin breitet sich aus und sorgt mit reifer Fruchtnote für ausgeprägten Nachhall.

Am Gaumen robust, kräftig, mehr Tannin zu spüren, Kirsch- und Cassisfrucht, wunderbare dunkle Fruchtkonzentration mit festen Tanninen, lang und nachhaltig, sehr saftig, ein großartiger Wein mit herrlicher Tanninstruktur und schöner Süße, großes Reifepotenzial."

The 2012 Palmer is already offering demonstrative drinking at age 10, bursting with aromas of cherries, blackberries, violets and spices, framed by a lavish application of creamy new oak. Full-bodied, ample and enveloping, it's fleshy and sensual, with a deep and layered core of fruit that's discreetly underpinned by succulent acids and sweet, powdery tannins. Concentrated, broad and persistent, this is one of the most successful wines of the vintage, as well as one of the most dramatic. Thomas Duroux is crafting more integrated, less overtly oaky wines at Palmer today, but this 2012 is nonetheless a terrific effort.

Château Palmer now systematically holds back an important percentage of its production for later release, and this September it's the turn of the 2012, a dramatic, sensual wine that is one of the clear successes of the vintage.
